Australia's 'Big Thumper' is alive again at the Cobdogla Irrigation & Steam Museum. The world's only working Humphrey Pump has been caringly restored and is demonstrated along with a steam locomotive, steam traction engine, oil engines, tractors and machinery from early development era of the Irrigation Areas. The spectacular Humphrey Pump, which is correctly described as a four stroke internal combustion pump, has been likened to a giant water cannon. Each outward stroke of the pump dumps some 220 tons of water into the delivery channel for a total of 1.25 million gallons per hour. Two small rooms located at the end of the quaint dining room give you an insight as to how simple life was back in the 1800's. Huge fireplaces take prime position in both the dining room and the bar area creating the perfect atmosphere to indulge in a bottle of local wine. For walking enthusiasts there is a walking trail which takes you past the limestone quarry where stone was removed to build the hotel, past the cemetery and up the hill to copper and ochre mines.
